New Mechanics In Reality Fracture

As every new Magic: The Gathering set arrives, its mechanics can determine how playable the cards become. Reality Fracture is generating buzz, especially around a controversial mechanic that some players feel may be overpowered.

Empower Jace

The set introduces Empower Jace, which works like Amass but is tied to the Jace Planeswalker. When you cast a spell with Empower Jace (X), a blue Jace token with X loyalty counters appears. The token has abilities to surveil 1 and to draw a card, and if you already control a Jace token you add the X value to its loyalty. Some spells grant extra abilities that the token inherits while the enchantment remains in play. Empower Jace is expected to dominate Prerelease and Limited play, though it may not heavily impact Standard or Commander formats.

Echoed Pairs

Echoed Pairs refer to cards that exist in both Multiverse and Echoverse versions. There are 15 such pairs, and each pack guarantees that you receive both cards, eliminating the perception that one half is rarer than the other. The Echoverse version is marked with an insignia in the rules text box.

Returning Mechanics

Reality Fracture also brings back a variety of familiar mechanics. Lifelink, Flash, Surveil, Scry, Replicate, Mill, Haste, Prowess, Menace, Deathtouch, Vigilance, Reach, Flying, Landfall, Ward, Trample, and Indestructible all appear on cards in the set. Among these, Prepared—introduced in Secrets of Strixhaven—returns in a reduced form, featuring fewer cards that can be prepared, and the Replicate mechanic, last seen on a single card in the Secrets of Strixhaven Commander set and previously popular in Modern Horizons 3, also makes a comeback. Landfall and Ward have become staples of the game’s overall strategy, so their presence is expected in most sets.

Additional Details

Magic: The Gathering originally launched on August 5, 1993, and was designed by Richard Garfield. These facts underline the game’s long history and enduring appeal.
