Pokémon Donut Shortage

The Pokémon Company and Krispy Kreme teamed up to launch a limited‑time series of Pokémon‑themed donuts celebrating the franchise’s 30th anniversary. The assortment includes flavors inspired by Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu, Jigglypuff and the iconic Poké Ball, plus a special set of “golden donut dots” (donut holes). I was excited to try them with Kotaku colleague Zack Zwiezen, but when I tried to reserve a half‑dozen for pickup on Tuesday, the site showed they were already sold out.

So, you know, of course, when I went to reserve the donuts this weekend for pickup on Tuesday, they were all sold out. Obviously!

Both Krispy Kreme locations in the Kansas City area were already sold out on Saturday, the day after the promotion was announced. I checked different order times and even tried reserving two weeks in advance, but every attempt returned an out‑of‑stock message. Nearby cities such as Springfield, Missouri, and Wichita, Kansas, were also empty, and social media posts suggest the shortage is nationwide.

I understand production capacity is limited and demand is high, but two weeks with no availability is absurd. The website promises “more availability when the collection launches later this week,” yet it offers no clear guidance on how to secure a donut. Should I camp at my computer for a pre‑order, or drive 25 minutes to the nearest store hoping for a first‑come‑first‑served chance? I’ve decided to stop trying and will stick to coffee and oatmeal at home.

For many Pokémon fans, this feels like another symbol of how hard it is to enjoy the hobby right now. Pokémon cards cost a fortune, attending Pokémon Worlds is a logistical nightmare, and even basic merchandise is pricey. Now even a themed donut is out of reach.

Meanwhile, eBay sellers are listing the empty donut boxes for $65 each, describing them as a “must‑have” for collectors. At least there’s a way to own a piece of the hype without the pastry.
