Zach Cregger’s Apology Tour for Resident Evil

Zach Cregger resident Evil will be released in just under a week, and the director has been on a self-described “apology tour” to promote the unfairly maligned film. However, Cregger doesn’t seem particularly bitter about the comments he’s been receiving.

Case in point: in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter (through PC gamer), Cregger stated that he agreed with the criticism of Resident Evil’yes He proved to the audience that the movie was “too fun” and found that he “liked the movie a lot more, too” after following his advice.

“I learned that people really liked the movie, but they thought it was too funny,” Cregger revealed. “So over the course of my testing, I eliminated as many jokes as possible.”

“Then I discovered that not only did the audience enjoy the movie more, but I also liked it a lot more,” he continued. “A little humor goes a long way in a horror movie, and there isn’t a single joke in this movie that I miss.”

On the one hand, it seems a little silly that Zach Cregger, known for producing horror films that deftly weave humor into the midst of fast-paced scares, had to tone down the humor in a resident Evil movie. I mean, the games are notoriously silly (I could literally insert any Leon Kennedy joke here as proof), and Cregger seems perfect to offer his own take on the series in that regard.

That said, the important thing is that Cregger believes the film is better for the changes. The man is going through quite a bit of terror right now, so I have a lot of trust in his judgment here.

Still, it will be interesting to align the final product with the leaked script for resident Evil which fell in Marchjust so we can find out which jokes didn’t make the final cut.
