Sonic redesigns rarely tend to work well. Let’s go back to 2019, when the design for Blue Blur’s big-screen debut was revealed. It was widely mocked as the hedgehog looked more like a rat, leading to a major redesign and delay of the film. It all worked out in the end, with all three films grossing over a billion dollars combined, but it could have been very different.
Now, following the reveal of Fortnite’s latest season, Override, Sonic and friends will be making another appearance, but their designs are being examined once again, with the Hedgehog looking surprisingly lanky.
Sonic The Hedgehog’s Fortnite redesign has had a mixed reception
The final season of Fortnite will be a huge celebration of video game history. Characters from series such as Mega Man, Kingdom Hearts, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and Persona are ready to make their debut in the Epic Games shooter.
Naturally, to fit into the world of Fortnite, many of these characters have undergone redesigns or slight adjustments to make them more appropriate, and it is Sonic who has had the worst of it.
The new look was first posted on Twitter by a user. kennythedevilwho showed off a new Fortnite x Sonic the Hedgehog comic. The comic is headlined by Sonic, Shadow, and Knuckles, and each of the three characters has decidedly longer legs. You can take a look at them below:
These designs then made their way onto social media, with Reddit users sharing their displeasure at the trio’s new look.
“Indeed… out. Having to fit Fortnite’s proportions means his hands have to be smaller and arms thicker, and it looks so weird…” saying EconomyThick9271. Splabooshkey aggregate“They feel like mid-level fanart. If a fan did this, I’d be very pleasantly impressed, but if it’s official? It seems a bit idiotic to me.”
While most comments are dismissive of the artwork, there are some that are a little more understanding. “It could have been worse. The proportions are very off, but unfortunately, that’s inevitable when you need masks to fit a standard skeleton and hit box.” saying Martyrs.
With the season starting in about three days, there won’t be time for a movie-style redesign, so this is a look fans will have to make do with.
