Sony’s Stranger Things Edition MDR‑3R Headphones
Welcome back to Conformity Gate. With Stranger Things Day sending fans back to the Upside Down, Sony has unveiled a limited‑edition pair of MDR‑3R wired headphones that match the iconic Walkman vibe.
The new version sports eye‑catching red ear pads, while a black set is included in the box. Priced at $79 (£59) in the UK, it sits above the standard model’s $59 (£49) launch price. Sony calls the design “Newtro,” blending modern audio tech—including a USB‑C connection—with a instantly recognizable retro look.
Visually, the headphones retain the thin band, thick silver driver board, and simple silhouette of the original MDR‑3. The limited‑edition red cushion replaces the standard blue or orange options, and a Stranger Things logo is printed on the top of the headband. For a full ’80s aesthetic, the orange‑based version offers better value, but the red variant is the only way to get the exclusive black notebooks referenced in the show.
Built from lightweight aluminum and stainless steel, the headphones use a USB‑C port for a charge‑free experience and feature an in‑line remote with a built‑in microphone for media control and calls. Sony says the sound signature stays close to the original while modern tweaks expand the low and high frequencies for a more dynamic sound, all within an open‑air design that lets music breathe.
Availability is pending; the product page currently shows no release date, but buyers can sign up for notifications to be first in line. The red‑cushion edition is a limited run, so keeping the refresh button handy is advised.
