Sekiro: No Defeat Falters as Anime Film Misses the Mark

The theatrical anime film Sekiro: No Defeat stumbles out of the gate, delivering a muddled adaptation that fails to capture the essence of FromSoftware’s 2019 hit.

Set in a blood‑soaked Japan, the game follows a one‑armed samurai, Wolf, as he guards the immortal heir Kuro from Genichiro’s quest to raise an undead army, a narrative that blends myth with relentless combat.

At Gamescom 2023, the studio announced an anime adaptation split into a theatrical film and a limited series, sparking excitement among fans eager for a fresh entry point into the world.

Critics say the two‑hour film feels rushed and dragged, sacrificing the emotional depth that defined the original game.

The movie adopts a painterly visual style reminiscent of ukiyo‑e and sumi‑e, offering an abstract aesthetic that diverges from the gritty realism of the game.

Adaptation experts note that a successful transition must either recapture interactive feeling, expand the universe with new stories, or reshape the existing narrative for the new medium; Sekiro’s film chooses the third path.

By extending quiet moments, the film spends time exploring Kuro’s immortality and Wolf’s bond, but the compressed runtime leaves character development feeling like isolated vignettes.

Action sequences, while technically impressive, rarely exceed a minute and lack the weight needed to sustain tension, making battles feel fleeting.

Without sufficient backstory, viewers unfamiliar with the game struggle to follow the plot, and even seasoned fans sense a diluted version of a story they love.

The film premiered at Fantasia Film Festival and later hit Japanese theaters, while a Crunchyroll series set for later this year may address pacing and narrative gaps.

Until the series arrives, Sekiro: No Defeat remains a stark reminder that a beloved game does not automatically translate into a compelling film.
