Sony Halts Fan-Made The Last of Us Multiplayer Mod
It’s been nearly three years since Naughty Dog announced that it was canceling its planned Last of Us Online multiplayer game. While the studio moved on, fan modders worked on an updated Last of Us multiplayer experience. Sony sent a letter requesting the mod not be released.
Modder Speclizer posted an update on Twitter saying the project will not see the light of day, and expressed hope that supporters will follow his next personal project.

Speclizer had been posting updates on the mod’s progress on YouTube throughout 2026, garnering thousands of views. The latest update, released last month, reached over 110k views and said the mod was “getting closer” to a playable version of multiplayer in The Last of Us Part II.
While Speclizer didn’t detail Sony’s letter, speculation arose that the mod’s Patreon‑locked access might have triggered the cease‑and‑desist, as companies often act when monetization is involved.
Same as it ever was.

Right now, the original Last of Us Factions multiplayer mode is playable on the PS4 remaster, but was omitted from the Part I remake launched on PS5 in 2022. With Naughty Dog’s game shelved and fan efforts thwarted, if the original servers shut down, multiplayer may soon be a thing of the past.
While Last of Us multiplayer may not be in the cards, Naughty Dog has hinted that a third game is in development.
