Blizzard hints at finally addressing the Sword of Sargeras
Five expansions after the titan Sargeras drove a massive blade into Azeroth, players have long wondered when Blizzard would finally deal with the looming sword. The planet even appeared wounded at first, but the wound healed, and the blade remained a silent, massive scar on the world’s skyline.
For years the developers have sidestepped the question, but at BlizzCon 2026 a background screenshot from a What’s Next panel gave a quiet acknowledgment of the issue.
The image, shown behind associate game director Paul Kubit during the Midnight expansion’s final raid discussion, features the planet’s glowing world soul at its center. To the left of the soul, a slender, spiny tip can be seen – fans on Reddit identified it as the tip of Sargeras’s sword.

That screenshot comes from The War Within opening cinematic, where Thrall and Anduin reference the blade, sparking speculation that Sargeras aimed at the planet’s soul itself.
What are the odds Sargeras, towering like a skyscraper, would stab the planet dead on and end up just inches from his goal? It seems unlikely the planet didn’t act to protect itself, perhaps explaining Anduin’s strange visions.
The sword isn’t a mystery, but its massive size makes it feel like an obvious blight that should have been removed long ago. Heroes have faced countless foes, yet this colossal scar remains unaddressed, prompting calls to finally pull it from Azeroth’s core.
Good thing the tip is now visible – maybe it’s time to finally remove the sword and the void harbinger trying to consume the planet’s essence.
