Warren Spector Announces Retirement from Game Development

“Let me cut right to the chase,” writes game producer and veteran behind classics like Ultima VII, Deus Ex, Thief, System Shock and Epic Mickey, Warren Spector says he is retiring. “At least I think so,” he adds, noting that age, health and a changing industry have made development less fun. (Thanks, Aftermath).

Spector’s résumé reads like a history of modern gaming. After working with Richard Garriott on the Ultima series, he helped shape Looking Glass’s immersive sims such as System Shock and Thief: The Dark Project. He later led Ion Storm, co‑creating Deus Ex and Thief: Deadly Shadows, and finished his studio work at Disney with Epic Mickey.

In the 2010s Spector became involved in several high‑profile but troubled projects, advising on OtherSide’s Underworld Ascendant, backing Argos: Riders of the Storm, and releasing the poorly received Thick As Thieves, which was pulled after two months.

At 70, Spector says his age and health are catching up with him, but he isn’t stepping away completely. He plans to write books, give lectures via a YouTube playlist, and offer occasional consulting. “I have mixed feelings,” he admits, “there are three games I still want to make, but the business has changed and a new generation deserves the spotlight.”

Reflecting on a 44‑year career that includes 17 full games and numerous add‑ons, Spector says he’s grateful that many titles are still played decades later and that he’s helped talented developers along the way.

His final message to young creators: games remain an unsolved problem, and the industry needs fresh experimentation. “Your job is to make people forget people like me ever existed,” he says.
