Player Count Hype vs Reality

Steam concurrent numbers are a useful gauge of a game’s overall popularity, but they’re just a single data point. The internet often turns that number into a narrative about a game’s quality, viability, or “deadness,” and a single claim that a title is dead can be enough to accelerate its decline.

Developer Bulkhead, known for the milsim Wardogs, recently shared that their closed beta hit over 200,000 Steam concurrents. In response to a TimTheTatman clip, CEO Joe Brammer explained that the surge is expected to ebb, describing the drop as a normal, healthy part of the game’s lifecycle.

“Wardogs will keep losing players for months as the hype fades,” Brammer wrote on X. “It doesn’t make the game bad or problematic; we anticipated 5,000 concurrent players, which is enough for a healthy community and a solid launch of version 1.0. The cycle will repeat, and the player base will grow again.”

Many of us follow a rotating list of multiplayer titles, returning occasionally for updates or to scratch an itch. While this is a healthy way to enjoy games, the rise of “forever” live‑service titles and high‑profile failures has fed the myth that a game must stay constantly active or it will die.

Like most games before 2016, Bulkhead doesn’t need Wardogs to be a chart‑topping megahit to stay viable. In a recent video titled “10 reasons not to buy Wardogs,” game director Howard Philpott said the initial player spike after launch is normal, followed by a decline that journalists and influencers sometimes amplify for clicks. He emphasized that a sustainable community can thrive with 3,000‑5,000 daily concurrent players, allowing new players to join an active environment.

Wardogs launches on September 10, and pre‑ordering grants access to the closed beta, which ends this Sunday.
