Xbox CEO Announces Project Helix Family of Devices
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, seemingly for the first time, called the next-gen Project Helix a “family of devices.” In an interview with BBC News, the console maker’s boss talked a little about the company’s approach to its next generation of consoles, known only by their code name, Project Helix.
“We’ve been working hard on a great next generation and a great family of devices for Project Helix,” Sharma says, perhaps gently confirming that there won’t just be an Xbox machine for you. we can buy when the next generation finally arrives.
This current generation of consoles offered people the Xbox Series X, the more powerful and expensive sibling, and the Xbox Series S, a cheaper, less capable machine that can play the same games.
There’s no official word yet on what the Project Helix “family” will offer, but I could see Microsoft trying to repeat its dual-console approach or even delve deeper into portable gaming.
“Of course, we will continue to push the limits of performance. We have talked about being able to not only play your console games, but also your PC games on your console. I also think that the entire industry needs to start innovating in terms of affordability and efficiency. That is something we have not had to do,” he adds.
“But with the crisis that is currently happening in hardware and components, it is something that we all need to think about and innovate and give people more options in terms of how they play their console and how they buy their console.”
We don’t know much about Project Helix other than the fact that it increasingly sounds like a PC hybrid machine that can play both PC and Xbox console games, and the fact that it will probably be very expensive to buy outright.
Elsewhere in the interview, Sharma alluded to the different ways people can purchase smartphones as a possible solution to the affordability of next-gen consoles, and explained that different business models could suit a broader audience.
And on the topic of The Elder Scrolls 6 possibly releasing as an Xbox console exclusive, Sharma simply said that “every platform needs some kind of exclusive experience.”
