Square Enix’s HD-2D Mastery Fuels Final Fantasy Resonance

Square Enix has cemented its reputation as the undisputed master of the HD-2D art style, a claim backed by its pioneering 2018 release of Octopath Traveler. The company now applies the same technique to Final Fantasy Resonance, announced at Gamescom and described as the best‑looking Final Fantasy title to date.

Gameplay Highlights

Resonance draws its narrative from the Lapis story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a 2015 mobile gacha title, yet Square Enix assures players that prior knowledge is unnecessary. The demo featured the recruitment of Noctis from Final Fantasy XV as a summon, a mini‑dungeon called the Sanctum, and a full 3D cutscene that marked the character’s return.

Visions—equipment items representing classic characters—grant each party member a unique attack set, allowing seamless integration of legacy fan service without detracting from the main storyline. The world map, populated with random encounters, leads into a traditional dungeon layout containing enemies, puzzles, and hidden chests.

The combat system adopts a turn‑based format enhanced by a timeline bar that displays the order of actions for both player and enemy. This mechanic, also seen in titles like Star Renegades, adds strategic depth by indicating optimal attack and defense windows. Players may equip a Vision to cover elemental weaknesses, enabling higher damage output against resistant foes. A stagger system forces enemies to skip turns when sufficient damage is dealt, and aligning all four party members on the timeline triggers a cinematic 3D finisher, often involving a Vision or summon.

Release Information

Final Fantasy Resonance is scheduled for release on October 22, 2026, and will launch on PC via Steam and on PlayStation consoles. The game is rated Everyone 10+ by the ESRB, with content descriptors for Alcohol Reference, Fantasy Violence, Language, and Suggestive Themes. It is a single‑player experience.
