Heroes of the Storm Returns with New Hero Xal’atath

For years the game sat dormant in my library; I never revisited it during the pandemic and even sold the physical copy during a move. In 2022 Blizzard announced that, aside from minor updates, Heroes of the Storm would no longer receive substantive support. Yet last July a full patch arrived, the first in five years, signalling a possible revival.

A BlizzCon to Remember

At this year’s BlizzCon Blizzard unveiled Xal’atath, the Harbinger of the Void, a ranged assassin drawn from the upcoming World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion. She marks the first new hero since Hogger in 2020 and will enter the Public Test Realm on September 14, with a full release on September 28. Her arrival, together with promises of further content, suggests the game is being revitalized as long as players return.

Blizzard President Johanna Faries thanked the community for “carrying the torch” and hinted that another hero is already in development. The company emphasized that future updates depend on community engagement, calling this patch a “first foray into something really big.”

For me, Heroes of the Storm was more than a free‑to‑play title; it was the first online game I bought a physical copy of, reflecting how much I enjoyed its “game as a service” model. The blend of brawler action and tactical teamplay made each match feel rewarding, especially when friends communicated effectively.

The gameplay still shines. With a few reliable teammates, the experience became a fun, strategic outlet that I’m eager to revisit. If the community shows up, Blizzard has indicated it will keep expanding the roster and support the game. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but for the first time in years the lights of Heroes of the Storm’s Nexus are being switched back on.
