Zach Cregger has spent months defending his approach to Resident Evil. Now, with the movie nearly here, the director says audiences should simply watch it and make up their own minds.

Director Zach Cregger knows there are Resident Evil fans who remain skeptical about his upcoming movie, but he appears finished trying to convince everyone ahead of its release.

Speaking with The Playlist about the film and the criticism surrounding his interpretation of Capcom’s survival-horror franchise, Cregger described the experience as being on something of an “apology tour.”

Rather than continue explaining why his version deserves to carry the Resident Evil name, Cregger now has a simpler message: “See the movie.”

If fans still believe he missed the mark afterward, he says they are entitled to that opinion. Cregger believes the finished film will ultimately “speak for itself.”

This Isn’t a Retelling of the Games

Much of the debate comes from Cregger’s decision not to directly adapt the story of characters such as Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield or Jill Valentine.

Instead, the upcoming Resident Evil tells an original story centered on Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams. Bryan finds himself trapped in a rapidly collapsing nightmare as a seemingly ordinary night becomes a desperate fight for survival.

Sony describes the movie as a complete reinvention of the franchise featuring an all-new story. Alongside Abrams, the cast includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser. Cregger directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten.

However, creating new characters doesn’t mean Cregger is ignoring the games.

The director previously explained that his movie incorporates elements familiar to players, including weapon progression, limited resources, healing items and escalating threats as the protagonist enters new locations. He has also included numerous visual references and Easter eggs inspired by the games.

That approach seems designed to capture what it feels like to play Resident Evil rather than simply recreating one of Capcom’s existing stories scene for scene.

Winning Over Resident Evil Fans Won’t Be Easy

Cregger is entering dangerous territory. Resident Evil has one of gaming’s most passionate fanbases, and previous Hollywood adaptations have produced wildly different reactions.

The director has acknowledged that some players primarily want to see the games faithfully recreated on screen. Cregger, however, believes Capcom’s games already tell those stories effectively and has chosen to explore another corner of the same horror universe instead.

It’s a risky decision, but potentially an interesting one.

Instead of measuring the film by how accurately it recreates a police station hallway or whether Leon’s haircut looks perfect, Cregger wants audiences to judge whether his movie captures the tension, desperation and grotesque unpredictability that made Resident Evil famous.

And very soon, fans will get that opportunity.

Resident Evil arrives exclusively in theaters on September 18, 2026.

Cregger has made his case. Now he appears ready to stop explaining it.

The next move belongs to the audience.
