The latest Magic: The Gathering Arena update introduces a player reporting system, letting you flag griefing, AFK play, abusive language and other misconduct.

With in‑game chat still absent, this reporting feature is a necessary step before that function can be added, hinting that chat may arrive soon.

Player Reporting Arrives In MTG Arena

Reporting became available on August 18, giving players a way to alert Wizards of the Coast to violations such as inactivity, hate speech, inappropriate usernames, verbal abuse and spamming.

After you submit a report through a drop‑down menu and add a brief note, a human moderator reviews the case.

Wizards has partnered with GGWP to handle reports, and once the system is proven they plan to add automated checks, reserving human review for appeals or edge cases.

In the early stages, reviews may take longer, but the human oversight should keep decisions fair.

Automated tools will later speed up the process, though they may introduce false flags, especially for inactivity reports.

AFK play, or “roping,” is a common problem where a player lets their timer run out after clearly losing.

It’s hard for an automated system to distinguish genuine connection issues from a player simply taking time to decide, especially when opponents grow impatient.

The new reporting tool addresses a growing need for accountability as the game sees more inappropriate usernames, poor in‑game conduct, and easy access to abusive messages between friends.

Is Player Reporting A Precursor To In-Game Chat?

Because verbal abuse and hate speech are reportable offenses, the lack of any in‑game chat currently forces players to rely on external communication.

While chat with random opponents isn’t possible now, you can message friends by adding their full username and ID number.

Developers have not confirmed chat’s arrival, but the rollout of reporting suggests it could appear as early as the first quarter of 2027, giving the system time to mature before handling live conversation.
