It has been more than a year since Neil Druckmann, the director of the live‑action HBO series, stepped away from the show, leaving showrunner Craig Mazin in charge. The series is now set to conclude with a third season, instead of a fourth that was once considered. While Druckmann cannot comment on the current production, he hinted at additional Last of Us projects, including a possible third video game.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Druckmann discussed how writing for video games has evolved since his work on the first two seasons, and how that experience shapes his current role directing Naughty Dog’s upcoming sci‑fi action game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. He said his focus on that project was the main reason he left the HBO series after its second season, and when asked about the third season he replied that he knows nothing and is not involved in Mazin’s plans.
Druckmann said he was not involved in shaping the season’s creative direction and that Naughty Dog had no creative role, so he cannot comment on how production is progressing.
Naughty Dog is reportedly working on unspecified projects within the series, which could be a new game, another adaptation, or other creative endeavors, but details remain unclear.
According to Druckmann, Naughty Dog remains the steward of the Last of Us IP and, despite the show ending, has several projects in development that he looks forward to discussing when the time is right.
I’ve been clear that HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us ranks among the most abhorrent video game adaptations. While I’m uneasy about the final season, I’m also skeptical that Naughty Dog will produce a third game that continues the story after Part II. The way Druckmann described his upcoming projects leaves open the chance that another game could be in the works.
