Masahiro Sakurai Suspends His Game Designers Award

Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Kirby and the Super Smash Bros. series, announced that his Game Designers Award will be suspended because he cannot find a suitable successor. Since 2010 he has presented the honor at the Japan Game Awards, and at the 2026 ceremony the prize went to Team9’s Word Game, while Pokémon Pokopia captured the grand‑prize title. Sakurai, who serves as the award’s main judge and selects other judges, based the criteria on innovative game design, citing figures such as Fumito Ueda, Shinji Mikami and Toby Fox. He said he could not continue the role due to the time‑intensive nature of the position, which may sound harsh but reflects the difficulty of finding someone willing to take on the responsibility.

Why Originality Still Matters

Sakurai emphasized that creativity is central to the award, noting that “originality doesn’t really have much of an impact on sales,” yet an industry that loses its originality will “simply die slowly.” In today’s market, ever‑larger budgets often push AAA titles toward safer, more homogeneous experiences. Sony’s recent Marvel’s Wolverine launch received criticism for feeling too generic, and the company abandoned Hideo Kojima’s Physint due to budget concerns, despite Kojima’s reputation for bold, distinctive design. He remains one of the few AAA creators whose visionary approach still shines. Players can sense that spark in games like Kirby Air Riders, a Kojima title, or works by Hideki Kamiya and Yoko Taro, where each experience feels uniquely crafted. Meanwhile, indie developers continue to push boundaries, proving that fresh ideas thrive outside the AAA sphere.

Even as big‑budget games become more cautious, the spirit of innovation lives on in smaller studios, ensuring that the future of gaming remains vibrant and diverse.
