Warcraft 3’s New Campaign Puts Story First

For players who view Warcraft 3 mainly as a real‑time strategy game, the new campaign The Forsaken Kingdom feels more like an RPG, with no basebuilding to manage.

This shift isn’t out of step with the series; the original game added Rexxar’s story‑focused content, which was well received, and the new direction is welcomed by many.

At BlizzCon, senior manager Brad Chan explained that the campaign was built to serve the narrative, emphasizing street‑level characters such as a city guard rather than a prince or king, to give players a grounded, “on‑the‑ground” perspective.

He added that Warcraft 3 is the only successful RPG‑strategy hybrid, so leaning into the RPG aspect lets the team tell broader, commander‑scale stories when the plot calls for it.

While longtime RTS fans may feel the lack of basebuilding is disappointing after Reforged launched, Chan points out that the RTS genre remains vibrant, citing successes such as Total War, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, Age of Empires and Tempest Rising.

Hazzikostas, the senior developer, says Blizzard is re‑entering the RTS space and will shape future updates based on community feedback; if players express a desire for more basebuilding and army‑forming storytelling, the team is ready to accommodate.

The campaign also ties into larger Warcraft narratives, linking Warcraft 3 to World of Warcraft and the upcoming Forever expansion, which will explore Northrend and the Arthas storyline, including a limited‑time “remix” mode centered on Wrath of the Lich King and the arrival of undead paladins.

Hazzikostas notes that the franchise’s storytelling cohesion is deliberate, and that the medium allows players to step into a character’s shoes—like Arthas—to experience a compelling personal journey that defines the series.
