Documentary about BioWare’s Rise and Fall
An upcoming documentary titled Mass Effect: The BioWare Story will chronicle the history of the Canadian studio, from its founding to its recent closure.
Deadline reports that Canada’s Super Channel will present a Shane Fennessey and Adam Scorgie documentary titled Mass Effect: The BioWare Story next year. Filming began two years ago, offering a glimpse into the studio’s early days and its final months, including work on the now‑canceled Mass Effect Universe project.
The documentary will feature interviews with founders Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip, as well as developers such as Casey Hudson, Mark Darrah, David Gaider, Drew Karpyshyn, Aaryn Flynn, Mac Walters, Trent Oster, James Ohlen, and Caroline Livingstone. Voice actress Jennifer Hale, known for portraying Commander Shepard, will also appear.
“When the production team asked for our blessing to tell BioWare’s story, we were honored and deeply moved,” co‑founders Muzyka and Zeschuk said in a statement to Deadline. “BioWare was never just about the logo or the building. It was about the stories that the incredible people on our development teams brought to life and the fans who championed those worlds, defended them and carried them forward. We are proud that this film pays tribute to those who made it all possible. The best stories never end. They live in our memories and wait for someone to pick them up again.”
The film will premiere at a film festival before receiving worldwide distribution through UpstreamFlix.
BioWare officially closed on October 21, and fans have since mobilized. They launched a petition urging the Canadian government to help BioWare employees acquire the studio and its intellectual property so it can operate independently. Supporters have organized billboards in Times Square, spray‑painted messages outside EA’s offices, and used social media to spread the #saveMassEffect campaign.
