Overview
Geralt’s life as a witcher in The Witcher 3 is usually simple, but the side quest “Where The Cat and Wolf Play” shows the harsh reality most witchers face. The story is compact, well‑written, and forces you to confront a fellow School of the Wolf member.
Starting the Quest
The quest begins in the town of Honorton, which is overrun by alghouls. Kill the monsters there, or alternatively locate “Contract: The Beast Of Honorton” on notice boards in Crow’s Perch and Oreton to trigger the quest.
Investigating Honorton
Geralt must search four locations: the large house to the north, the small huts to the west, the barn to the south, and the surrounding area. Each site contains clues such as a leshen head, a silver chain, and evidence of a violent struggle. After examining all sites, a cutscene shows a young girl fleeing; use Witcher Senses to find her doll and follow her footprints.
Confronting Gaetan
At a stone circle you discover a bloody handprint and trail left by the witcher Gaetan. Follow the trail, fight off a pack of wolves, and locate Gaetan resting on a distant bench. You then decide his fate.
Choosing: Spare or Kill
If you spare Gaetan, he thanks you and rewards you with a steel sword, 250 crowns, and the medallion Tegir, while avoiding combat. If you kill him, you must duel his superhuman abilities, but you still obtain Tegir and the story’s moral weight shifts.
How to Beat Gaetan
To survive the fight, do not let Gaetan drink Swallow; he will use the moment to blind you with a bomb. Use a Noonwraith decoction to neutralize the bomb’s effect. Expect fast attacks and difficult parries; block when needed, and exploit Aard or bombs to stun him. Stay defensive, as a single mistake can be fatal.
Helping Millie and Quest End
After dealing with Gaetan, return to Honorton to aid Millie, the sole survivor. She seeks shelter with her aunt in Oreton. Give her 40 crowns to persuade the aunt, and the quest concludes with Millie safe.
