F‑Stop, Valve’s Cancelled Portal Prequel, Now Playable

F‑Stop, Valve’s cancelled 2007 Portal prequel, has resurfaced online and is fully playable. If you’ve heard of it, you already know why this is a big deal; if not, you’re in for a quick history lesson.

In 2007 Valve spent three months on the Directed Design Experiments, a series of five experimental game prototypes. One of those prototypes was F‑Stop. The Half-Life wiki has the full story, but here’s a brief version: Valve split into five teams, each creating a different experiment, and F‑Stop was the fifth.

F‑Stop was designed as a Portal prequel that used an experimental Aperture Science camera to warp perspectives and solve puzzles. Gabe Newell loved the idea, but playtesters were unimpressed, and the project was ultimately cancelled. Some of its dialogue, characters, and mechanics later appeared in Portal 2.

Thanks to several leakers and the the Valve Cut Content team, F‑Stop is now playable in almost its entirety.

The leak originated from a massive Steam2 dump of roughly 13 TB of depot data released in late August. That dump contained assets for F‑Stop, though it lacked the source code and map files. Those final pieces were posted to the Valve Cut Content Discord server within the past 48 hours.

According to the server moderators, the person who first shared the F‑Stop map files asked for $1,000 but gave them away for free. After verification, the community stitched the three pieces together, resulting in a nearly complete build.

Players report the game is about 99 % finished, with only a few missing assets or lines of dialogue. While Valve likely would have added more polish for a commercial release, the current version is far more complete than the zero‑percent state it was in just a week ago.
