Paramount revives Golden Axe in animated form
Paramount has enjoyed solid success with its live‑action Sonic movies, and now it’s turning to the Sega library again, this time adapting the classic arcade brawler Golden Axe into an animated series.
Voice talent includes Danny Pudi, Matthew Rhys, Lisa Gilroy and Liam McIntyre, who play a band of fantasy warriors on a quest to reclaim the Golden Axe from Death Adder. The show leans on the original game’s sword‑and‑sorcery vibe, featuring mountable beasts, large‑scale monster battles and vivid realms.
“We’ll do what we do best,” says Tyris Flare. “Face a series of progressively harder foes and finish with a showdown against Death Adder.”
The trailer riffs on the game’s mechanics and the absurdity of high‑fantasy tropes. It mirrors many modern cartoons, seemingly embarrassed of itself for having to be created and lashing out with smarm. Fans appear underwhelmed, tired of the sarcastic tone, and the franchise hasn’t seen a new entry in nearly two decades.

The new series sits alongside other high‑profile fantasy projects, from Critical Role to Dungeon Crawler Carl and Paramount’s upcoming Dungeons & Dragons film, which may not earn a sequel. While a Boris Vallejo‑style cartoon would be a treat, the market is crowded and the odds are steep.
