King’s Field 4 Delivers Brutal Poison Challenges

The new release King’s Field 4 launches with an opening cutscene that sets a grim tone: a cursed land, an ancient city, and a warning that “Grave misfortune will befall those who behold the idol that stares into the darkness.”

Developer FromSoftware implements poison as a core obstacle from the first mine entrance, where a “Beware: Poison” sign marks the start of a mine that forces players to navigate slimes, zombies, and environmental hazards that inflict poison damage.

According to the reviewer, the poison mechanic appears deceptively simple but quickly escalates: a stack of ten slimes continuously applies poison, zombies spit poison clouds, a mushroom releases poisonous vapors, and a poison lake forces repeated falls. The game also features a room that randomly poisons the player for merely standing inside.

Combat and movement suffer from sluggish, imprecise controls. The character moves at a glacial pace, making precise jumps across sinking boards or narrow bridges difficult. Missed hitboxes and slow stamina recovery extend each encounter, turning even low‑level battles into prolonged ordeals.

Despite these frustrations, the title blends humor and melancholy. The “Idol of Sorrow” carried by the protagonist curses anyone who looks at it, prompting laughter at the on‑the‑nose tragedy. NPC dialogue includes a weeping man, a merchant named David Bunch, and a grieving family in a hamlet, adding darkly comic flavor.

Music supports the atmosphere with minor‑key, atmospheric tracks that remain effective though occasionally repetitive due to limited area variety.

Players report that early deaths—such as falling into an invisible lava pit—are punishing yet brief, preserving progress while delivering a comedic lesson in the game’s cruelty. The spring of water in the poison dungeon can cure poison and restore health, but its limited supply forces careful resource management.

While the slow pacing and high difficulty may deter many, the reviewer notes that moments of breakthrough provide a satisfying sense of triumph, encouraging continued play despite frequent deaths.

King’s Field 4 is part of Kotaku’s “Warp Week” series, which revisits notable titles from gaming history.
