My First Scary Game Experience

In 2000 my family and I visited our local Blockbuster. Nine‑year‑old Zack begged to rent the original Silent Hill for the PlayStation 1. The game wasn’t new, and the console was showing its age, but I was excited to try something fresh. My mom knew the rating was M, yet she let me rent it because I’d already played other T‑ and M‑rated titles.

Before Silent Hill I hadn’t really played a horror game. I’d experienced tense moments, but nothing that felt truly scary. I’d never touched Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark, or similar titles, and I can’t even recall why I chose Silent Hill that day—I just grabbed whatever looked interesting and hadn’t played before.

The game opened with a warning about violent and disturbing images. My younger brother watched as I booted it up. The pre‑rendered intro clips impressed me, and then I took control of Harry Mason, stepping into the fog‑filled streets of Silent Hill. The constant low drone, the claustrophobic fog, and the eerie sound of my own footsteps made me feel nervous and uneasy.

I reached a gate, opened it, and saw a mutilated, blood‑soaked corpse. An air‑raid siren wailed in the distance, and I gripped the controller tighter. The alleyway turned darker, forcing Harry to use a lighter. The world grew rusty, the music swelled, and the camera wobbled, making my heart race. My brother left the room, but I kept moving forward.

The corridor became a nightmare of fencing and concrete, and I was terrified. At the end, more bloodied bodies and a corpse displayed on a stand greeted me. Suddenly, small, child‑like creatures emerged from the shadows with knives and attacked. I screamed, mashed buttons, and realized I was meant to take damage and pass out to continue. They caught me, and my heartbeat thundered louder than ever.

After the scripted cutscene, Harry woke in a diner and spoke to a police officer. When I resumed control, I cautiously explored, but as I tried to leave, a giant bat‑like monster smashed through the glass. Overwhelmed, I turned the game off and vowed never to play Silent Hill again.

Even after trying later entries in the series and other horror titles like Resident Evil, I kept that promise. I expect to return when the remake arrives, but I doubt any future game will scare me as profoundly as Silent Hill did more than twenty‑five years ago.
