Valve Discounts Index VR Headset as Production Ends
Valve has slashed the price of the remaining Index VR headset after the newer Steam Frame took its place. The headset originally launched in 2019 for $499, but customers can now purchase it for $399.20. The package does not include the controllers or base stations, which were part of a former $999 bundle that is no longer offered, so there is no discount on that combination.
Replacement left controllers cost $119.20 and spare straps are priced at $103.20. Valve has not listed any compatible driver replacements, meaning users who need controllers will likely have to source them elsewhere, just as they would for the base stations.
A recent Steam news post confirmed that the Index line is discontinued: “Valve Index is no longer produced,” it read, adding that the remaining headsets, controllers, and accessories are still available at the new prices while supplies last. The “while supplies last” warning is crucial, as Valve will not manufacture more units and has not disclosed how many remain in inventory.
Designer Lawrence Yang previously indicated that the Index was discontinued last year, but this is the first official confirmation from Valve. When the headset launched in April 2019, it was hailed as the best VR kit available, earning a top rating in our review, though it fell short of a perfect 2.0 approach. At the time, being tethered to a PC was still the norm, even as the original Meta Quest (then Oculus Quest) introduced wireless VR a few months later. Today, the wired requirement feels dated, but the Index remains a notable piece of hardware for enthusiasts and collectors.
