Why Collect Golden Walnuts?
Golden Walnuts are the special currency on Ginger Island in Stardew Valley. They are exchanged with the island birds to unlock areas, enable fast travel, and build facilities. There are 130 walnuts in total, and you need 116 to unlock everything, while collecting all 130 grants full island completion and a richer gaming experience.
General Ways to Earn Golden Walnuts
Many walnuts come from basic actions: fishing (about 5 each), harvesting crops (5), mining nodes (5), killing tiger slimes (1), processing golden coconuts (1), and completing the Pirate’s Wife quest (5). These routine tasks provide the bulk of the collection.
Volcano Dungeon
Exploring the Volcano Dungeon yields roughly 19 walnuts: five from breaking rocks, five from slaying enemies, five from breaking crates, one from a common chest, one from a rare chest, and two from shaking trees near the entrance and exit.
Island East
Two walnuts are found on Island East – one appears on a bush as soon as you enter the jungle, and the other hides in the foliage at the bottom of the bird shrine map.
Island West
Island West contains seven walnuts: two on small paths near the bridge, two just before the far‑west bridge (one behind a tiger slime and one in dark foliage), and three at sea level near a pond, Mr. Qi’s secret room, and the far‑north shoreline.
Island North
Island North provides roughly 15 walnuts: four after fixing the Dig Site bridge, one in a bush behind a tree near the volcano, two in stone circles at the south entrance, one in a half‑circle of stones by the volcano, one by a curved tree you can knock down with a slingshot, two in grass patches and sand near the field office, and several in secret paths.
Island South
Island South has four walnuts: one obtained by going to the northern part of the island and walking under the first tree on the right, and three after building the resort – from fishing in the star‑shaped area, digging between barrels in the pirate cove, and digging among four gold starfish on the beach.
Other Island Locations
Additional walnuts are found by simple digging: the centers of blue and yellow‑blue starfish, X marks in tide pools, the middle of the beach diamond, a grass circle in Slime Grove, the middle of pebble diamonds near Parrot Express, sand north of Birdie’s hut, next to a curved palm tree, a hidden path right of the Parrot Express, and a stone path inside the pirate ship wreckage.
Puzzle Rewards
Puzzle solving adds more walnuts: Leo’s tree (1), the Gem Bird puzzle (5), the banana offering to the jungle gorilla (3), the Gourmand Frog (15), Whack‑a‑Mole (1), the crystal puzzle (3), the musical rocks (5), and darts at the Pirate Cove (3). Field Office tasks give two from the survey and eleven from donating artifact pieces.
Buying Missing Walnuts
If you’re missing a few walnuts, the Joja Parrot near the volcano entrance will sell any you lack for 10,000 gold, an option mainly for repeat players. Collecting all 130 walnuts lets you experience the full Ginger Island life and achieve 100 % completion.
