Street Fighter Live‑Action Film Stumbles, Then Soars
The 2026 live‑action Street Fighter adaptation delivers a chaotic blend of terrible and entertaining moments, leaving audiences divided.
Centered on the rivalry between Ken and Ryu, the story thrusts the two into a World Warrior tournament that masks M. Bison’s scheme to siphon Ryu’s power, while Chun‑Li operates as a double agent with her own agenda. The massive ensemble includes Guile, Blanka, Cammy, and dozens of other iconic fighters, though many appear only briefly.
Cody Rhodes earns praise for his portrayal of Guile, emerging as a scene‑stealer, while Jason Momoa’s Blanka showcases a carefree, “stop‑giving‑a‑shit” performance that contrasts sharply with his recent Minecraft role, according to Variety.
Critics note that the film oscillates between “so bad it’s good” and “so bad it’s bad,” mixing campy humor, homoerotic jokes, and self‑aware irony. The writing leans heavily on Gen‑X nostalgia, and the soundtrack draws directly from 1990s playlists, reinforcing the film’s tongue‑in‑cheek tone.
The fight choreography impresses; actors convincingly execute signature moves such as Ryu’s fireball and Ken’s Shoryuken. However, the script limits screen time for several characters, confining Zangief and Guile to a bar‑room brawl instead of the tournament ring, and leaving many fighters with only fleeting moments.
Editing flaws further muddle the narrative. Abrupt cuts obscure conversations, splice unrelated footage, and stretch the two‑hour runtime into a bloated, disjointed experience, as highlighted by The Hollywood Reporter.
Despite these shortcomings, the movie’s relentless commitment to its premise salvages its worst elements into a cult‑worthy group watch. The blend of garbage and brilliance encourages audiences to sit together, dissect the madness, and ultimately appreciate the film’s chaotic charm, according to IGN.
