Next MTG Standard Rotation Date

The upcoming Standard rotation is slated for the first week of February 2027, right after the first set of the year hits the shelves on February 5, 2026. That date was announced at MagicCon Amsterdam, and all future rotations will follow the launch of each new year’s opening set, though the exact timing for the 2028 change has not yet been revealed.

Which Sets Will Rotate Out Of Standard?

Six sets will leave Standard in this rotation: Wilds of Eldraine, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, Murders at Karlov Manor, Outlaws of Thunder Junction, Bloomburrow, and Duskmourn: House of Horror. Although Foundations, released in 2024, will stay legal until 2029, it serves as a beginner-friendly entry point and will not be removed now.

How Many Cards Will Be Leaving Standard?

According to the official card database, 1,710 Standard‑legal cards from those six sets will be removed, representing roughly a third of the current pool. This massive shift should refresh the meta in early 2027, as the departing cards are replaced by the new sets launching that year, breathing fresh life into the format.

Why the Change Matters

With over 5,100 cards now legal in Standard, building a competitive 60‑card deck feels increasingly difficult, and the meta has grown somewhat stale. Recent bans of three key cards gave a temporary boost, but the upcoming rotation promises a more substantial refresh, giving players new strategies to explore and helping keep the format vibrant.
