Christopher Judge Explains Why He Won’t Play Kratos in the God of War TV Series

For years, Christopher Judge has been the voice—and emotional heart—of Kratos for a generation of God of War players. So when Amazon began developing its live-action God of War series, one question followed almost immediately: Why not simply let Judge play Kratos on television?

Now, Judge has explained that the possibility was much closer to reality than many fans realized.

Speaking during a recent panel at Fan Expo Canada, the 62-year-old actor revealed that he had discussions about the role and even read for the live-action series. At one point, Judge became serious enough about playing Kratos that he began training and putting on additional muscle.

The motivation was personal. Judge said he considered portraying Kratos in live action as something special he could leave behind for his grandson.

Eventually, however, reality set in.

Judge explained that becoming the lead of a massive television production would mean extraordinarily long shooting days combined with maintaining the imposing physical condition audiences expect from Kratos. He said he didn’t want to spend his life working 16-to-18-hour days while constantly dieting and training.

It wasn’t simply about getting into shape.

Judge also revealed that memorizing material during the audition process was becoming more difficult than it once had been. Having already spent more than a decade as one of the leads on Stargate SG-1, he recognized what another physically and mentally demanding television commitment would require.

“I just have no desire to live that way again,” Judge explained.

Kratos Has Already Changed Hands

The live-action Kratos role has experienced its own unexpected journey.

Amazon originally cast Ryan Hurst, who already had a connection to the franchise after portraying Thor in God of War Ragnarök. Hurst began filming the Prime Video adaptation in Vancouver before suffering a torn bicep while performing a stunt in June 2026. Because his recovery would have significantly delayed production, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television ultimately decided to recast the role.

Dave Bautista has since officially been cast as the new Kratos. Production is expected to resume with Bautista, while previously filmed Kratos material will require reshoots.

Judge praised Hurst as an excellent choice and has also expressed optimism about Bautista, although he admitted some concern about the physical transformation the 57-year-old actor may need to undergo for the role.

Judge Still Wants God of War to Succeed

Judge’s absence shouldn’t be interpreted as bitterness toward the television project.

His bigger concern has been whether adaptations properly recognize the people responsible for creating the games in the first place. In August, Judge criticized the tendency of Hollywood adaptations to move forward without heavily involving the original game’s writers and developers. He stressed that his comments weren’t an attempt to campaign for the Kratos role himself.

Prime Video’s God of War is being overseen by Ronald D. Moore and has already received a two-season order. Its story will follow Kratos and his young son Atreus on the journey familiar to players of 2018’s God of War.

For fans who hoped to see Judge physically wield the Leviathan Axe, his comments finally provide an answer.

He considered it. He trained for it. He even read for it.

But after years of giving Kratos one of gaming’s most recognizable voices, Christopher Judge decided that playing the God of War didn’t also have to consume his real life.
