A bizarre dispute inside the Star Wars Galaxies preservation community has escalated after a Reddit moderator acknowledged using AI-assisted tools to decrypt protected files belonging to the fan-operated SWG Legends project.
More than two decades after Star Wars Galaxies originally launched, the legendary MMORPG is generating headlines for a reason nobody expected. The team behind Star Wars Galaxies Legends, one of the largest community-run versions of Sony Online Entertainment’s discontinued MMO, says a moderator from the Star Wars Galaxies subreddit used artificial-intelligence tools to decrypt files containing years of custom development work.
What Happened to SWG Legends?
According to the Legends development team, Reddit user levarrishawk, also known as Levarris, used AI-assisted tools to decrypt the project’s client-side game asset files. The files reportedly contained custom items, quest content and even Bespin, an area created by the Legends team years after the official version of Star Wars Galaxies closed.
The incident has frequently been described as a server hack, but there is an important distinction: Legends says no player information or personal data was accessed. The reported compromise involved client-side game assets rather than players’ accounts or personal records.
Legends also alleged that the decrypted material was offered to developers of other Star Wars Galaxies community servers, although the team said it could not confirm whether anyone had accepted or used those files.
A Feud More Than a Decade in the Making
The strangest element of the story may be the alleged motivation.
Levarris publicly responded to the accusations and linked his actions to a dispute dating back roughly 14 years. He alleged that people who later became associated with Legends had obtained development tools originally belonging to Sony Online Entertainment and failed to make them available to other developers attempting to recreate the game. Those historical claims remain disputed within the community and should not be treated as independently established fact.
The response from players has largely focused on how an old disagreement between developers appears to have resurfaced years later in a completely new form: AI-assisted reverse engineering.
Why This Matters Beyond Star Wars Galaxies
Star Wars Galaxies officially shut down in 2011, leaving fan projects to preserve and expand an MMO that otherwise would have largely disappeared as a playable online world.
Projects such as Legends depend heavily on volunteer programmers, artists and designers. Custom locations and quests can represent thousands of hours of unpaid work. When those files are extracted and potentially redistributed without permission, it highlights how vulnerable community-operated games can be.
The AI angle makes the story even more notable. AI coding and analysis tools can make technical tasks that once demanded specialized knowledge significantly more accessible. That can help game preservation—but the same capabilities can also be used to bypass protections surrounding community-created work.
For SWG Legends players, the good news is that this incident reportedly did not expose their personal information. For the wider gaming community, however, it offers a fascinating—and uncomfortable—look at how old online rivalries are colliding with increasingly powerful modern technology.
