Preserving Classic Pokémon Battles in Pokémon Champions

For three decades, Pokémon games have used turn‑based battles, but the recent release of Legends: Z‑A introduced real‑time mechanics that challenged long‑standing strategies. While that shift divided fans, Pokémon Champions was created to give competitive players a dedicated space for the classic turn‑based experience, a mode the developer Game Freak says will remain available for the foreseeable future as future titles continue to experiment.

In a studio video, game designer Shigeki Morimoto and co‑director Kazumasa Iwao explained that the battle simulator was built to preserve traditional turn‑based combat while freeing upcoming games to explore new mechanics.

Morimoto noted that the rules governing competitive Pokémon battles have defined the series since the original Red and Green games, and later Gold and Silver. Simply telling longtime fans to “play the new version” after a change would ignore their deep‑rooted enjoyment, a concern the team has wrestled with for some time.

The goal was to create a game that carries forward the existing battle system, allowing players to enjoy it indefinitely, which became the foundation for Pokémon Champions.

While the developers hinted that future titles may evolve the battle system, they did not specify how. If Legends: Z‑A’s real‑time battles become the template, many are excited, yet some fans who disliked the shift when it launched on Switch and Switch 2 remain wary. Leaks suggest the upcoming Winds and Waves titles may retain the classic turn‑based format, but the series could also introduce new variations. Only time will tell.
