Blitzball: A Star Wars‑Inspired Minigame in Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy is famous for its quirky minigames, but few are as bizarre and beloved as Blitzball, an underwater soccer sport created for Final Fantasy X. The game’s director and producer, veteran Square Enix developer Yoshinori Kitase, recently revealed that Star Wars served as one of its inspirations.
Blitzball takes place inside a massive floating sphere of water, blending soccer and rugby with physical tackles and special kick techniques aimed at hitting a high‑tech backboard. Unlike most Final Fantasy minigames, it plays a central role in the story: it frames the game’s cinematic intro, is the main vocation of protagonist Titus, and unlocking top‑ranked league status grants a rare late‑game item.
When asked about his creative process, Kitase explained that his work on the franchise has long drawn from Star Wars. “One more example of a Star Wars influence in FF that came to my mind is from Final Fantasy X, where I had to create Blitzball for the game inside the fantasy setting,” he told IGN at the Lucca Comics & Games Festival 2026. “I used an idea from Star Wars Episode I’s podrace and the concept of incorporating sport into a fantasy world, taking it directly from Star Wars.”
Star Wars creator George Lucas developed podracing from his love of car racing and hot‑rod culture, a detail that later helped seed a completely different fictional sport in another universe. Interestingly, Blitzball has been referenced in the Star Wars galaxy before.
Author Mike Chen namedropped it in his novel Brotherhood, confirming the reference was intentional. In 2022 he tweeted, “Blitzball is basically underwater hockey played as a minigame in Final Fantasy X. As a former NHL writer, I freaking loved Blitzball and spent hours winning leagues.”
