PSVR 2 Faces an Uncertain Future

This week PlayStation removed the PSVR 2 from its US and Japanese stores after months of shortages in the US and UK. The timing follows Sony’s sale of its mixed‑reality patents to Meta and suggests the headset is nearing the end of its life. Critics praised the device, but its limited software support and high launch price dampened enthusiasm, and a later price cut arrived too late to offset Sony’s neglect.

After reviewing the headset, I consider it the best VR option despite newer rivals. Meta’s Quest 3 offers affordable mixed‑reality, while Pimax and HTC deliver superior visuals. PSVR 2’s strong specs, stunning displays and gaming‑focused design give it a unique edge, yet Sony’s lack of dedicated software support and absence of a PC connection have shortened its lifespan.

In 2024 Sony shut or repurposed its VR studios — London, Firesprite, Guerilla Cambridge and Asobi — eliminating key development talent. With the PlayStation Plus VR catalog shrinking and few free VR titles, the platform lost momentum, a setback that need not have doomed PSVR 2.

PSVR 2 still only offers the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle. State of Plays says VR is no longer a priority, and the last new VR title arrived mid‑2025. The missing PC lifeline — clunky adapter, limited functionality — further hurt its appeal.

In 2023 Sony experimented with PC hardware and software, but never made the headset compatible with the largest VR market segment. A simple DisplayPort, HDMI or native USB connection could have provided a safe fallback. Sony’s mishandling of this top‑tier hardware will be remembered, and PSVR 2 lacked both software support and easy PC access, leaving it with little chance to survive.
