Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II and the V Cameo Debate

Unlike the first season, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II’s story takes place after Cyberpunk 2077, and fans have been searching the anime for any sign of characters from CD Projekt Red’s RPG, including V, the customizable protagonist. Since the show is set after 2077, V’s appearance would raise continuity questions and whether the franchise now has a “canon” ending based on the game’s choices.

In an interview with IGN, showrunner Bartosz Sztybor discussed fan speculation about a possible V cameo in Edgerunners season — the “default” female V with a red undercut seen in the game’s promotional artwork. The character’s face appears in an Arasaka database alongside other cyberware‑compatible individuals, including Edgerunners season one protagonist David Martinez, leading some fans to think V is alive in Night City post‑2077, though Sztybor says this is just fan speculation.

“We don’t want to set a canon ending,” he says. “So there were a lot of conversations again with the lore team to see what we can do to somehow satisfy all the endings, and what will be the state of the world after the game. That’s why the scene that you asked about, we don’t want to be straightforward, but we are giving some suggestions that will probably reveal the state of the world in more comic books and other stuff. So there are discussions. There are discussions, but we are not setting one kind of ending.”

The supposed V cameo is questionable; fans note the hairstyle and cyberware don’t match the “default” female V or 2077 promo art, so even if the show were to canonize a specific V, the look isn’t a perfect match. Still, the show avoids directly addressing V’s fate, leaving it open to multiple outcomes based on player choices.

When creating Edgerunners season one and its comics and board games, the canon was set before the game, so we knew the world’s state. For post‑game content there’s no super‑detailed canon, only that Arasaka is weakened, which provides many ways to depict the city differently.

It isn’t detailed, so none of the endings are canon, but events in the game could lead to any outcome, whatever the player’s choice.

I appreciate creators for choice-driven franchises having this mindset, even if future Cyberpunk projects can’t include characters with multiple fates based on 2077 choices. Notably, Rogue, the Afterlife nightclub owner, appears briefly in season one but not season two, likely because she can die in a game ending. This removes characters in quantum states, letting all fans enjoy the work without feeling their choices are invalid.

Cyberpunk 2 is currently in development at CD Projekt Red. We’ll see if it sticks to this principle and allows for all potential endings of the first game whenever it comes out.
