Who Is Astarion?
In Baldur’s Gate 3, Astarion is a charismatic vampire spawn who joins the party early, near the Nautiloid crash site. His witty dialogue, strong voice acting, and sassy personality quickly made him a fan favorite, and his story offers many branching possibilities.
Key Decision Points
Early in the game Astarion tries to drink your blood during a long rest. You can let him, refuse and ask him to leave, or even stake him, which kills him instantly. Allowing the bite grants him the Vampire Bite ability and boosts his combat prowess, while refusing or dismissing him ends his involvement.
Later at the Riverside Teahouse the vampire hunter Gandrel confronts you about Astarion. You may surrender him, kill Gandrel, or ignore the encounter. Siding with Astarion earns his approval and reveals more of his tragic past, whereas giving him to Gandrel removes him from the game.
In Act Two the drow scientist Araj Oblodra offers a potion for a permanent Strength boost in exchange for Astarion biting her. Astarion refuses, fearing her poisonous blood. Respecting his boundaries leads to a later cutscene, while forcing the bite strains the relationship and can cause him to leave.
If you romance Astarion, he will confide in you about his discomfort with intimacy due to his time as Cazador’s slave. You can reassure him, pressure him, or guilt‑trip him. Pressuring him or guilt‑tripping ends any chance of a romance and may cause him to depart.
Cazador’s Palace and the Ascension
Act Three’s climax takes place in Cazador’s Palace, where the Rite of Profane Ascension offers several routes. Supporting Astarion’s ascension makes him a Vampire Ascendant—more powerful but also more arrogant, cruel, and potentially abusive if you romance him. Persuading him not to ascend lets him kill Cazador, keeping his spawn nature and leading to a more benevolent ending. Forbidding the ritual causes him to kill Cazador reluctantly and then abandon the party, which is considered the worst outcome. Interrupting the ritual by killing Cazador mid‑ascension forces a deadly duel with Astarion, a less desirable but survivable path.
Netherbrain and the Sun King Ending
If you choose Astarion as your origin character, Patch 7 adds a special ending. After defeating the Netherbrain you can become the Absolute by taking control of the brain. This decision unlocks the Sun King ending, where Astarion becomes an all‑powerful ruler, bathed in radiant darkness, and unleashes vampire spawn across the world. The outcome is the same regardless of whether he ascended earlier; it is the most evil ending available to players who start as Astarion.
Conclusion
Exploring Astarion’s multiple story paths lets you tailor his fate to your preferred playstyle, whether you seek a dark, powerful ruler or a redeemed companion who remains a vampire spawn. Testing each route in separate playthroughs ensures you experience the full range of his narrative possibilities.
