Captain Karthik in Avatar: Seven Paradises
We are mere episodes of Avatar: Seven Paradises and I’m in love. Whenever a certain type of man shows up in a game, show, movie, comic, or novel, my single brain cell lights up. The Paramount+ sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra introduces a man I’m already subscribing to the service for—just don’t make Captain Karthik a surprise villain.
Karthik belongs to the Order of the White Lotus, is an airbender who commands the wind, and serves as the surrogate father of the new Avatar Nisha. He is also, most importantly, a dad.
Fans note his disheveled look—white strands peeking from his brown hair, tired puppy eyes, and a protective, stern yet exhausted demeanor as he keeps up with the twin sister protagonists. He is gentle and calm, raises his voice when needed, and the Avatar community calls him a ‘glass of water,’ promising plenty of fan art and edits.

However, some scenes have fans on guard, and because I’m drawn to him, statistically speaking from my lifelong media experience, he will likely become a twist‑revealing villain. He is forceful with his orders and beliefs and once scolded Nisha, telling her to “remember [her] place.” While this may be justified in a world where I learned to treat the Avatar with suspicion, it puts him opposite the show’s two leads.
The deeper speculation rests on his care for Nisha after she was separated from her twin sister Pavi, another Avatar who manipulates all elements. Fans think he knows something the rest of the cast doesn’t, and Nisha can’t reveal it because she has lost her memories. Is he hiding something evil, like kidnapping her as a child? Is he merely a jerk, or could he seek to exploit the Avatars’ powers for his own gain? Or is there something far deeper?
“I don’t think Karthik is power hungry or malicious,” writes one fan on Reddit. “I think his heroic intentions are genuine, it’s just that he believes he is the only one capable of making the right decisions and when the going gets tough, he is willing to kill others for what he believes is the greater good.”
New episodes of Avatar: Seven Paradises premiere Fridays on Paramount+.
