Potential $1,000 Console Pricing Threatens Sales

Industry analysts warn that pricing the next‑generation PlayStation and Xbox at $1,000 could cause a steep decline in sales compared to the current generation.

Ampere Analysis predicts that if the PS6 and Xbox Project Helix launch with a $1,000 base price and are merely incremental upgrades, combined unit sales could fall 38% over five years, shaving 12% off overall spending on games and services.

The forecast cites a $900 PS5 Pro, ongoing trade tensions, and persistent RAM shortages as factors that already make a $1,000 price tag plausible, while another analyst warns that such costs could be “quite significant” for consumers.

Ampere suggests several ways to avoid the downturn: delay the launch until component costs drop, use hardware subsidies, introduce new monetization models, push aggressive digital content strategies, and optimise sales channels, or pursue bold innovation that goes beyond raw graphical power.

Nintendo’s Wii showed that form‑factor innovation can outweigh raw horsepower, and the Xbox Series S proved that a lower‑priced, streamlined model can still attract buyers; a $1,000 successor would be a shock in a market where everyday expenses for food, fuel and housing are already high.

Former Sony president, asked about the prospect of a $1,000 PS6, joked, “How much more ray tracing can you put in there?” highlighting the perceived lack of meaningful new features at that price point.
