Marvel’s Wolverine Preview Defies Backlash, Delivers Brutal Combat

Insomniac Games unveiled a PlayStation 5 preview of Marvel’s Wolverine at its London office, instantly silencing critics who claimed the title would be a misstep.

Fans had flooded forums with complaints about suit regeneration, linearity, boss design and characterisation, but early hands‑on footage showed the game delivering the visceral, fast‑paced combat promised.

It’s A Cliche But Wolverine Makes You Feel Like Wolverine With Its Brutal Combat

The demo opened with Wolverine, Sabretooth and Mystique racing to rescue Nathaniel Essex in Talenbang, establishing a narrative hook that tied Logan’s return to the X‑Men to a past debt.

Liam McIntyre’s portrayal of Logan blended gruff humor with genuine emotion, giving the character depth beyond typical berserker tropes.

Combat featured rapid light attacks, combo enders, a tornado claw, a leap strike reminiscent of Spider‑Man’s web zip, and an insta‑kill “rage” state that unlocked brutal finishing moves.

While the system lacked Spider‑Man’s gadget freedom, the variety of special moves, upgrades and passive “Adaptations” kept the experience fresh, and occasional stealth sections added contrast.

I’m Already Hooked On Wolverine’s More Personal Story

After rescuing Essex, the preview shifted to Madripoor, where Logan and Team X regrouped in the Princess Bar, offering a slower, character‑driven interlude.

Multiple costumes — including a Deadpool & Wolverine suit, Weapon X gear and a classic tank top — plus interchangeable claws were showcased, highlighting customization options.

A brief balcony scene between Logan and Jean Grey hinted at a richer, more personal storyline that promises emotional stakes beyond the usual action.

The open training facility segment proved the game was not strictly linear, granting players a choice between combat and stealth approaches.

Preview Confirms Insomniac’s Winning Formula

Within two hours of play, the demo dismantled the most common criticisms: combat felt satisfyingly brutal, pacing remained breakneck, and character interactions felt authentic.

Insomniac’s track record with Spider‑Man titles lent credibility, and the Wolverine preview reinforced its ability to translate a complex hero into an engaging, mature experience.

Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15, 2026, under a Mature 17+ ESRB rating that covers blood and gore, drug reference, intense violence, partial nudity, strong language and in‑game purchases, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
