Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls Review

Arc System Works releases Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls on August 6 2026 for PC and PS5, adding a 4‑v‑4 tag system to the Marvel fighting‑game roster.

The title launches with 20 Marvel heroes and villains, each unlocking a fourth teammate through stage‑transition points that reset corner pressure, forcing players to plan team composition before each match.

Unlike Marvel vs. Capcom, Tōkon does not use separate lifebars; instead a shared health bar ties all four characters together, making assist choices a strategic decision rather than a resource mechanic.

Reviewers note that the game’s simple input scheme masks a layered tag system that rewards careful character swapping, assist timing, and role‑specific positioning.

One‑trick players, such as those who main Star‑Lord, find the tag mechanics initially restrictive, but adjusting the support roster—replacing a single‑use assist like Captain America’s shield toss with Spider‑Man’s web barrage—can open new combos and improve ladder performance.

Arc System Works’ design blends anime‑style visual flair with accessible controls, allowing newcomers to execute flashy combos while veterans can explore deep strategic layers.

The game’s story mode features five teams competing in a tournament overseen by the Champion of the Universe, with each team’s narrative presented in a digital comic written by Kieron Gillen and illustrated by distinct artists.

Outside of online play, Tōkon offers arcade, survival, and casual party modes such as Arcadia Rumble, providing low‑stakes environments for skill practice and local multiplayer.

Back‑of‑the‑box quote: “Fun isn’t something one considers when balancing a fighting game. But this…does put a smile on my face.”

Developed by Arc System Works, Tōkon is classified as a 4v4 anime fighter set in the Marvel universe.

Liked: a blast to play and watch, accessible for newcomers yet deep enough for fighting veterans.

Disliked: occasional visual clutter makes reading the fight difficult, and the tag system can overwhelm players unused to tag fighters.

Played for roughly 40 hours across the base game and beta, the title shows a solid foundation despite early technical hiccups.
