Budget Gaming Controllers: From Ready‑Made to DIY

If you’ve spent years playing console games, you probably trust the controller that comes with the hardware. Yet the PC market offers a range of affordable gamepads, especially in the budget tier. The current editor’s pick for the best low‑cost PC controller is the GameSir Nova Lite, which regularly drops below $30. It delivers solid performance without breaking the bank, making it a sensible choice for gamers who want decent quality without a hefty price tag.

For those who want to go even cheaper, a DIY project called Undercooked V0.4 shows how low the budget can truly go. Built for roughly €10 (about $11.22), this controller can be assembled in about six hours. Its design is deliberately minimal: it lacks a D‑pad and a full set of face buttons, offering only a single analog stick, ‘X’ and ‘A’ inputs, a menu button, and a ‘B’ button placed on the right shoulder. Creator Lazy_Duck explains that the goal was simplicity, affordability, and easy sourcing of parts from even the smallest electronics store.

The hardware core is an RP2040‑Zero microcontroller on a protoboard, rather than a full printed circuit board. The case is 3D printed from about 150 g of filament and fastened with heat‑set threaded inserts, giving the shell a sturdy, impact‑resistant feel. While the ridged exterior looks rugged, it can be uncomfortable for extended play, so sanding the outer surfaces is recommended before final assembly. The flat back of the controller adds to the unconventional look, and some users report finger fatigue simply from looking at it.

Even if the DIY controller isn’t comfortable for marathon sessions, it remains an excellent electronics project for hobbyists. It demonstrates how a functional gamepad can be built from inexpensive components, and it may even inspire you to tinker with your own custom input devices. Whether you opt for the polished GameSir Nova Lite or embark on the Undercooked V0.4 build, there are plenty of budget‑friendly options to keep your PC gaming experience smooth and affordable.
