The newest trailer for Street Fighter has arrived, and Legendary Pictures appears determined to answer one question immediately: how many characters from Capcom’s fighting-game universe can possibly fit into one movie?
Apparently, quite a few.
Released on September 1, the latest look at the 2026 live-action adaptation puts considerably more focus on the enormous World Warrior roster while continuing to establish the fractured friendship between Ryu and Ken Masters. The film arrives in theaters on October 16, 2026.
Everybody Wants to Fight
Set in 1993, Street Fighter follows an estranged Ryu, played by Andrew Koji, and Ken Masters, played by Noah Centineo. The two are pulled back together when Chun-Li, portrayed by Callina Liang, recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament.
Of course, this being Street Fighter, the tournament quickly becomes something much bigger.
The newest trailer showcases an almost ridiculous number of familiar faces, including Guile, Cammy, E. Honda, Dhalsim, Zangief, Balrog, Vega, Blanka, Akuma and M. Bison. Even some of the franchise’s signature attacks are making the transition to live action, with E. Honda’s rapid strikes, Chun-Li’s kicks and the expected Hadoukens all making appearances.
The cast itself is just as unusual as the roster. Cody Rhodes plays Guile, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson becomes Balrog, Roman Reigns steps into the role of Akuma, David Dastmalchian plays M. Bison and Jason Momoa undergoes a dramatic transformation as Blanka.
Faithful—or Just Ridiculous?
The latest footage is already producing the kind of reaction that may follow the film all the way to release.
Some viewers are embracing its willingness to reproduce the exaggerated costumes, hairstyles and personalities that made the games famous. Others aren’t convinced those designs translate naturally into live action.
Characters such as Blanka and Guile have received particularly mixed reactions, while the overall movie has been described as deliberately campy and almost B-movie-like. Rather than hiding from the ridiculous elements of Street Fighter, director Kitao Sakurai appears determined to amplify them.
That could ultimately be the movie’s biggest strength.
Sakurai has said he didn’t want to create an ordinary, “off-the-shelf” video-game adaptation. Instead, the director wanted something unconventional that captured the playful feeling of imagining outrageous martial-arts battles as a kid.
And the new trailer certainly looks unconventional.
Ryu and Ken Remain at the Center
Beneath all the costumes and celebrity casting, the movie appears to have a surprisingly straightforward emotional foundation.
Ryu and Ken were once close friends, but something has driven them apart. Chun-Li’s invitation to the tournament forces them back into each other’s lives, and the trailer suggests jealousy, resentment and their shared past will become central to the story.
Meanwhile, M. Bison is operating behind the scenes, ensuring that the World Warrior Tournament is about much more than simply discovering the world’s greatest fighter.
That structure could be exactly what such an enormous ensemble needs. Instead of trying to give every fighter a complicated storyline, Street Fighter can keep Ryu and Ken as its emotional center while allowing everyone else to provide the spectacle.
Street Fighter May Have Finally Found the Right Tone
Video-game adaptations often struggle when filmmakers become embarrassed by the source material.
This Street Fighter movie appears to have the opposite problem—if you can even call it a problem.
The costumes are outrageous. The hairstyles are ridiculous. The special moves make absolutely no attempt to look realistic.
And that may be exactly why this version has a chance.
The new trailer isn’t trying to convince audiences that Street Fighter should suddenly become grounded prestige cinema. It’s presenting a world where a green monster can fight a karate master while a sumo wrestler launches himself across an arena.
Some fans are going to hate how absurd it looks.
Others may discover that absurd is exactly what Street Fighter needed to be.
