FromSoftware has slipped a surprisingly emotional Dark Souls 2 callback into Elden Ring’s new Tarnished Pack DLC, and longtime Souls fans immediately recognized who the mysterious Knight Leontiel was meant to resemble.
The Lands Between just received another dose of classic Dark Souls nostalgia. Released alongside Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition on August 28, 2026, the new Tarnished Pack adds two starting classes, additional weapons and armor, new looks for Torrent, and other content to the original game.
But one of its most interesting additions isn’t listed as a returning Dark Souls character.
Her name is Knight Leontiel.
And if you spent enough time wandering through Drangleic in Dark Souls 2, she should look extremely familiar.
Remember Her Name?
Players can encounter Knight Leontiel as a new NPC invader in Caelid’s Wailing Dunes, the enormous battlefield where Starscourge Radahn is fought. After Radahn has been defeated, traveling north toward the War-Dead Catacombs can trigger Leontiel’s invasion. Defeating her rewards players with her complete armor set and Leontiel’s Greatsword.
That’s where the connection becomes difficult to ignore.
Leontiel bears an unmistakable resemblance to Lucatiel of Mirrah, one of Dark Souls 2’s most memorable NPCs. Lucatiel wore a distinctive wide-brimmed hat and mask, carried a greatsword and traveled across Drangleic while slowly losing herself to the curse of Hollowing.
Even Leontiel’s name sounds deliberately close to Lucatiel.
The callback goes considerably deeper than clothing. After examining the new character model, longtime FromSoftware dataminer Zullie the Witch found that Leontiel’s uncovered face closely resembles Lucatiel, including a mark around her left eye corresponding with the Hollowing corruption visible on Lucatiel in Dark Souls 2.
FromSoftware hasn’t officially declared that Leontiel literally is Lucatiel, so calling this a canonical resurrection would go too far. The stronger interpretation is that she’s an elaborate tribute—and perhaps one of FromSoftware’s most affectionate references to Dark Souls 2 yet.
Her Greatsword Makes the Tribute Even Better
Leontiel’s Greatsword also carries a special skill called Muleta, named after the red cloth used by a matador.
The move has the player dramatically taunt an enemy before transitioning into an attack, reinforcing the Spanish-inspired visual style associated with Lucatiel’s famous outfit. Players have already begun experimenting with the weapon’s flashy animations and combat potential.
For Dark Souls 2 fans, however, the significance is less about weapon statistics and more about seeing Lucatiel remembered at all.
One of Lucatiel’s defining moments involved her fear of losing her identity as Hollowing consumed her. She ultimately asked the player to remember her name.
More than a decade later, FromSoftware seemingly has.
That makes Knight Leontiel much more than another NPC invasion. She’s a clever piece of Souls history hidden inside Elden Ring—and an unexpectedly fitting tribute to a character whose story was always about the desire not to be forgotten.
