Sony continues to grapple with backlash over its 2028 decision to stop selling new PlayStation discs, a move confirmed in its recent earnings call. Fans remain angry, and the timing of this week’s automated terms‑of‑service reminders felt especially clumsy.

“You recently accepted the following PlayStation terms (the “Terms”): PlayStation Terms of Service, PlayStation Code of Conduct, PlayStation End User License Agreement, PlayStation Privacy Policy,” read an email posted on the PlayStation Solutions subreddit on August 18. “For your convenience and future reference, we have included full copies of the Terms in this email. Please retain this email for your records. The Terms set out important information about your rights and obligations when using PlayStation.”

Many PSN users were confused by the sudden email, even after months of inactivity. Rather than simply linking to the legal text, the message reproduced the relevant sections, including section 1.4 of the Software EULA titled “License to you,” which governs digital purchases, the only way to obtain new PlayStation games from January 2028.

“The Software is licensed to you, not sold,” it reads. You are granted a limited, non‑exclusive, non‑transferable personal license for private, non‑commercial use on the intended device. The license starts on the release, early‑access, or beta date, and any rights not expressly granted are reserved, covering all intellectual property. Players may not rent, lease, modify, or obtain the software through any method other than SIE’s authorized channels.

The #PSBlackout protest begins tomorrow!

We demand that physical games remain available; a digital‑only future lacking ownership rights and consumer protections is unacceptable.

This summary highlights the restrictions that frustrate fans about Sony’s move to discard discs. While many gamers prefer physical media and want it to stay, others would accept a fully digital market if they had genuine consumer rights instead of arbitrary platform rules. For instance, gifting a PSN account and its game library — even as an inheritance — is prohibited.

The timing of Sony’s reminder emails is ironic, coming just days before a fan‑led PlayStation blackout protest (August 23‑30) that urges a halt to gaming until the company reverses its disc‑killing policy. Organizer DoesItPlay? wrote, “We want physical games to stay! A digital‑only future without ownership and consumer‑protection law is unacceptable! Log off, stop playing, cancel subscriptions, become a ghost, until Sony realizes its mistake!”
