World Humanoid Robot Games Set for Beijing
Robots are more than just walking computers; they now perform a wide range of tasks. Christopher Livingston, who rarely trusts these machines, reports monthly on their progress, and this month Lincoln Carpenter did the same. This week, Beijing will host the second annual World Humanoid Robot Games, an event that attracted attention last year as a “Robot Olympics.”
The Games feature thousands of humanoid robots operated by hundreds of teams, competing in more than 50 events that span from weightlifting to simulated fire rescue. Organizers divide the competitions into two types: scenario‑based events, where robots must autonomously complete tasks in settings such as retail or food service, and traditional competition events that mimic classic Olympic sports like long jump, gymnastics, and track races.
One notable incident occurred during a training session for a track event. A lone humanoid robot sprinted at high speed, its rubber feet clacking loudly as it flailed its limbs with intense, youthful vigor. It headed straight for a safety barrier, collided with a thud, stumbled backward, and attempted a cartoonish “woowoowoowoowoo!” motion to counteract gravity. The impact caused its waist joint to overextend, sparking a burst of smoke and debris. An event staff member walked away, leaving the damaged robot behind.
Although the crash was dramatic, organizers describe it as an isolated malfunction rather than a commentary on the pursuit of autonomous technology. The Games remain a celebration of engineering achievement and a platform for teams to showcase their robots’ capabilities.
