You’ll Still Have To Play MGS With A Friend
The original Metal Gear Solid remains one of the most iconic stealth games ever made, a title that turned the series into a household name. Though re‑released many times and even revived in Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, the game has never offered a co‑op experience, leaving fans to play it solo.
Konami’s recent remaster packs have kept the single‑player focus, but a dedicated fan named Felipe has created a pre‑alpha multiplayer mod that lets two Solid Snakes explore Shadow Moses together. The trailer shows both characters moving through the opening levels, and Felipe explains that the original engine was never built for multiplayer, so the project required a series of work‑arounds.
Built on the GOG PC version, the mod strives to keep as much of the game playable in co‑op as possible. While the final jeep chase sequence will stay single‑player only, each player can use separate cameras and inventories, adding a fresh layer of strategy. To keep the difficulty balanced, the mod raises boss health and adds extra reinforcements, with optional settings that let players tailor the challenge to their taste.
The mod is still a work in progress, with no release date announced and not all features confirmed for the final version. Nevertheless, it stands out as a promising community effort that could revive the cooperative spirit of the Metal Gear series, especially now that Metal Gear Solid Delta’s multiplayer mode has stalled.
Original release: October 20 1998; ESRB rating: M for Mature 17+ (blood, gore, suggestive themes, violence); Developer: Konami Computer Entertainment Japan; Engine: Fox Engine.
