Binance Suffers $6.3 Billion Crypto Theft

A massive cryptocurrency theft that may be the largest in history appears to have begun with a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop. The attacker gained access to a service container and was able to submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions, resulting in the loss of roughly $6.3 billion worth of bitcoin, ethereum, solana, XRP and other digital assets from Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange.

Binance says it has frozen about $3 billion of the stolen funds through partnerships with blockchain intelligence firms, leaving $3.3 billion still unaccounted for. Founder Changpeng Zhao, who stepped down after a four‑month prison sentence for anti‑money‑laundering violations and was later pardoned by President Trump, announced that all user losses will be covered by the SAFU fund and company reserves, assuring that user funds remain safe.

As an immediate precaution, Binance temporarily halted deposits and withdrawals, revoked the compromised residence authorization, and engaged law‑enforcement and blockchain‑intelligence teams to track and recover the assets. Its staff are working around the clock, and an updated Proof of Reserves will be published once the investigation is complete.

Analysts note that the breach did not involve breaking encryption or stealing private keys; instead, the attacker took control of the system that authorizes signatures. Check Point’s Jayant Dave told the BBC that the hack was executed at a speed and scale never seen before, and TRM suggests the incident exploited a hot wallet—an internet‑connected wallet used to process withdrawals—allowing a single actor to obtain valid signatures for wallets on ten chains within hours.

The suspected perpetrator is the North Korean state‑sponsored group TraderTraitor, linked to a $1.5 billion Bybit hack earlier this year. Tether also froze more than $1.5 billion of USDT tied to the breach. While the full scope of the attack remains under investigation, the episode raises questions about how a lone compromised laptop can cause billions in losses, how centralized players can freeze massive amounts of decentralized assets, and how repeated large‑scale heists might erode trust in the crypto ecosystem.
