Sir Patrick Stewart Passes Away at 86
Oh. This one hurts. Sir Patrick Stewart, a cultural icon and all-round good guy, has died at the age of 86. Classically trained actor, he was perhaps best known for his portrayal of Captain Jean‑Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Later generations would also know him as Professor Xavier in the X‑Men films, and his reprise of the role in December’s Avengers: Doomsday could be his last film appearance. But I knew him as Aelius Sejanus, the cruel and ambitious Praetorian guard in the BBC production of I, Claudius. He had hair back then, and although he played a relatively minor role, when he showed up, he stole that show. It was hilarious to see a guy I normally associated with do‑gooders play a villain with the same exacting seriousness he brought to his hero roles.
The Internet is flooded with tributes to the man and, in sharing them here, I do so through a veil of tears that blur the vision. Those with Shakespeare themes are particularly impactful.
Considering his role in The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, I can hear it in his voice.
Cheer up.
Yes, Star Trek, yes X-Men, but I can’t tell you what it meant to see Patrick Stewart in Jeffrey in 1995. Having someone at the top of a hugely popular sci‑fi franchise appear in an indie comedy about gay men with AIDS meant a lot to me as a closeted teenager.

In honor of our captain, one of my favorite candid moments: giving his partner an impromptu acting lesson while high. Good luck, Sir Patrick. The scene will never be the same again.

love is not love
That is altered when it finds alteration,
Or bend with remover to remove.
Oh no, it’s a brand always set
Who looks at the storms and is never moved;
It is the star of every errant bark,
The value of which is unknown, although its height is taken into account.

A beautiful thread about how fucking cool this guy was.
The Patrick Stewart story I’ve told before: He did a few shows with The Improvised Shakespeare Company, one in New York (for about 15 minutes of the show) and a full show in Chicago. It was the upstairs of iO in Wrigleyville, maybe 100 seats. No one knew he would be there.

This sums up what everyone must be feeling right now, even me, who isn’t very familiar with their space escapades.
